Unwaxed 35/3 1.4m length
35/3 waxed linen thread in 1.4 metre lengths
The length of about 1.4 metres allows for two shorter lengths for those happy to cut the thread to help avoid tangles, although this means threading the needle more often. The full 1.4m length is probably about as much as can be managed without too many tangles whilst sewing. The waxing also helps diminish this. The 1.4 metres is determined for us by the factory. We do not unwind and re-measure.
"35" is a guide to the thickness of the thread, and "3" is the number of separate strands spun together to make it. 35/3 is amongst the thinnest linen threads normally available. We would recommend it for sewing any books, although larger albums might benefit from a stronger thread such as a 25/3. Linen thread is also available in 40/3 should you require it.
Linen thread is very strong, and for most bookbinding purposes thinner threads, such as this, have more than sufficient strength. They have the advantage of causing less swell to the back of the book. This thread has been left unwaxed, and can be dyed or glued.
